AB: Commercial cultivation of the date palm in Gujarat (India) is
restricted to the Gulf of Kachchh. Propagation techniques used in this area and
other parts of the world are briefly described. Propagation using offshoots is
the commonly practised method in Gujarat, but is lengthy and difficult;
propagation by seed results in large variability; rejuvenation of mature palms
is under investigation; and tissue culture propagation has been successful in
many countries.

AB: Of the nine methods of propagation studied, sexual reproduction,
propagation by offshoots and air layering proved most successful. All methods of
propagation were either slow or not successful owing to rooting difficulties.

AB: Various possible methods of propagation are discussed, with notes on
their relative advantages and disadvantages. Propagation by mature basal
offshoots is the only method at present widely used commercially, but
propagation of small offshoots under mist shows promise.
