It is the custom in most regions
of the world to grow some other crop in the shade of date palms, especially in
the desert oases. Low shallow-rooted crops such as vegetables are preferable
while the date palms are still young. After the date palms are tall enough to
permit cultivation under them, the planting of other fruit trees between them is
advisable.
